If you’re somebody who likes to converse about street photography a lot, I am almost certain you have listened to someone make the above statement before. It’s highly possible you have even said it yourself. However, in this digital world, do any of us shoot street photography just for ourselves?

Leica has been making the rounds again as of late, not for a specific camera but for a promotional video that got it banned in China. Titled The Hunt, the video features a cinematic depiction of conflict scenes around the world, including the iconic "Tank Man" from the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. The video has since put the German camera company under fire from online commenters and banned on Chinese social media platform Weibo.

The Fujifilm 16mm f2.8 R WR lens is a lens that I wasn't expecting from the company simply because of the fact that they already had a very good 16mm f1.4 R WR lens. However, considering the company's philosophy of bringing things down to a more elementary audience in a more affordable, weather sealed form, it played out into being right in line with what they do. This is a lens that isn't all that bad, but if you own the Fujifilm 16mm f1.4 R WR, you don't need this. I'll preface the review that way, but also note the very affordable price point of this lens.

It's always fascinating to hear photography greats talk about their own work and the ideas or motivations behind them, even if it's the controversial Bruce Gilden. Whatever you want to think of his style as a street photographer, many of his works remain exemplary in street photography and documentary photography. Among these is the black and white Gangster Types and Tough Guys series, which shows us the culture and daily life of England's brawlers and Japan's infamous crooks. Who else can best tell us more about this body of work but Gilden himself?

“Oh my god! I was super excited, thrilled to get there!” says Antonio Privitera as he recounts how his childhood dream to shoot the streets of New York finally came true. His latest series is not just an exploration of New York, it’s a narrative that tells the story of a photographer in his element. It’s the perfect advertisement for what happens when a creative mind meets an inspiring destination. Simply put, this is freedom and love communicated through the medium of photography.

"People nowadays think almost like a tribe about equipment and gear." says Omar Z Robles about his recent project released that is shot on film. "But in the end they're just tools to carry your vision." We're inclined to agree--in the same way that a painter can create works of art with a variety of brushes, a photographer can do the same. We've spoken with Omar about his creative process on Inside the Photographer's Mind before, and he's very careful about his overall creation process. While one may think that he's simply capturing scenes, he's actively directing--which is what folks of folks don't do vs simply capturing. With Omar's years of shooting under his belt, this was an interesting mental challenge for him; which he obviously succeeded at.

Anyone who works out in the field will tell you about the importance of having a good, solid weather sealed camera. Weather sealing will allow a photographer to go out into a downpour, a snow storm, or a windy day with dirt and debris flying everywhere. Rain and snow aside, weather sealing will also protect your camera when it is operating in humid conditions, and even the freezing cold. As long as you have a weather sealed lens attached to the front of your camera you will be good to go. Here we will take a look at 10 of the best weather sealed cameras that are currently on the market.

If you haven’t watched the 5 Portrait Lighting Setups yet, you can watch it here first: So we are going to try different head and posing positions with each of the lighting positions. Same Direction, Same LightButterfly Lighting to Loop to Rembrandt The easiest idea to start with is facing the two of them in the same direction and having the same light shine on both of them. They are both in a butterfly lighting, right now and they look great, but they don’t look like they are together. Let’s turn them into one element instead of two, so by changing their posing, we see what happens. When we turn them to face each other now, they are in a good position to adjust the lighting to a different style. So we can turn the light from a butterfly to a loop to a Rembrandt. Now I can take my V-flat and just slide that in to open up the faces. This concept can be applied in a variety of different ways. We can turn them to a profile side view, but this pose is very stiff, so let’s see how we can adjust it. With their heads turned, they now have a Rembrandt light on their faces. This is still an example of one lighting direction. Different Direction, Different Lighting PositionsRembrandt and Butterfly Lighting So we are going to see what happens when we have them positioned in opposite head directions with different lighting on their face. When we turn Kay in slightly towards David she turns into a nice Rembrandt light, and when we turn David in as well we see that he has a butterfly light on his face. Now let’s move them into another position here, if David turns to face the camera and we put Ksenia behind him they are positioned with two different lighting situations. David has a nice Rembrandt lighting on his face, and Ksenia has a butterfly light on hers. Let’s switch places! Now she’s in a Rembrandt light and he’s in a butterfly light. Don’t be afraid to mix and match lighting situations to create a new combination. Butterfly and Loop LightingShe has a beautiful butterfly light on her face, and he has a loop light on his face. This pose is great for showing off both people in a way that isn’t too straight to the camera. By allowing her face to rest along his shoulder it creates some interest compositionally. We don’t have her other hand to rest on his shoulder because it’s too distracting. We are going to change up the pose, but we are keeping the same butterfly and loop lighting. This is working because their faces are working together in the shot. As you set up your models and these lights, you can play around with how you want the light to fall on each of them and adjust them accordingly. If the light is up high enough with a softbox, it’s going to give you the ability to use the 5 Lighting Portrait Positions to light a couple. Thanks to our models David and Ksenia Ishoot for helping us out with today’s lesson! About the author: Jay P. Morgan is a commercial photographer with over two decades of experience in the industry. Using a wildlife trail camera, he discovered that a mouse was spending hours every night putting his tools back and tidying up his workspace. The retired electrician first noticed objects mysteriously being moved around in his garden shed earlier this year. Screws, plastic parts, nuts, and bolts on his workbench were continuously returned to the old ice cream tub that he had emptied them out from the night before. Mckears then enlisted the help of his 70-year-old neighbor Rodney Holbrook, who helped Mckears set up a trail camera in the shed to figure out what was going on. The 2-minute video above is one of the clips the duo stealthily captured. What the camera revealed was that a mouse would show up like clockwork early each morning and meticulously drag each item on the workbench back into the box. Mckears thought he was going crazy when he found his tools organized on a nightly basis, but the mouse must have questioned its own sanity as well upon seeing its hard work reversed every day. from https://petapixel.com/2019/04/20/trail-camera-catches-mouse-secretly-cleaning-mans-shed-every-night/ |
